Sukhakarta Dukhharta (सुखकर्ता दुःखहर्ता) is the most iconic
Marathi aarti dedicated to Lord Ganesha, composed by the 17th-century saint and
philosopher Samarth Ramdas Swami — the spiritual mentor of Chhatrapati
Shivaji Maharaj. The title translates directly as "the one who brings joy and removes
sorrow" — sukhakarta meaning bringer of happiness, dukhharta
meaning remover of suffering.
The aarti describes Ganesha's divine form with warmth and intimacy: his bright,
luminous appearance, his love for modaks (the steamed rice dumplings that are his
traditional offering), and his role as the remover of obstacles for all who approach
him with devotion. This combination of theological precision and affectionate
detail is characteristic of the Maharashtra sant tradition from which the text
emerges.
It is the defining aarti of Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations across Maharashtra and
among Maharashtrian communities worldwide, sung morning and evening throughout the
ten-day festival. For millions of devotees, this aarti is inseparable from the
festival itself — it is often the first Marathi devotional text a child learns.

सुखकर्ता दुःखहर्ता वार्ता विघ्नाची।
नुरवी पूर्वी प्रेम कृपा जयाची॥
सर्वांगी सुंदर उटी शेंदुराची।
कंठी झळके माळ मुक्ताफळांची॥
Sukhakarta dukhharta varta vighnachi |
Nurvi purvi prem kripa jayachi ||
Sarvangi sundar uti shendurachi |
Kanthi jhalake maal muktaphalanchi ||
He is the bringer of joy and the remover of sorrows; He banishes the news of all obstacles. His love and grace fill the heart. His entire body is smeared with beautiful vermillion (shendur), and a necklace of pearls shines around his neck.
वे सुख देने वाले और दुखों को हरने वाले हैं; वे सभी बाधाओं और कष्टों के समाचार को मिटा देते हैं। उनकी कृपा और प्रेम भक्तों के मन को भर देता है। उनके पूरे शरीर पर सुंदर सिंदूर का लेप लगा है और उनके गले में मोतियों की माला चमक रही है।

हे प्रभु आपकी जय हो, मंगलमूर्ति आपकी जय हो। केवल आपके दर्शन मात्र से ही मन की समस्त कामनाएं पूर्ण हो जाती हैं।

O son of Gauri, You are adorned with jewels. Sandalwood paste mixed with saffron and vermillion is applied to Your body. A crown studded with diamonds looks magnificent on Your head, and the anklets on Your feet tinkle melodiously.
हे माता पार्वती के पुत्र, आप रत्नों से सुशोभित हैं। आपके शरीर पर चंदन, कुमकुम और केसर का लेप लगा है। आपके सिर पर हीरों से जड़ा मुकुट अत्यंत सुंदर लग रहा है और आपके पैरों में रुनझुन करती पायल बज रही है।

लंबोदर पीतांबर फणिवरबंधना।
सरळ सोंड वक्रतुंड त्रिनयना॥
दास रामाचा वाट पाहे सदना।
संकटी पावावे निर्वाणी रक्षावे सुरवरवंदना॥
The big-bellied Lord wears yellow silks and a serpent as a belt. He has a straight trunk, a curved face, and three eyes. The servant of Rama (the poet) waits for You at home; please bless me in times of trouble and protect me at the final moment, O One worshipped by all gods.
लम्बोदर (बड़े पेट वाले) प्रभु ने पीले वस्त्र धारण किए हैं और गले में सर्प की जनेऊ है। उनकी सूंड सरल है, मुख वक्र है और उनके तीन नेत्र हैं। रामदास स्वामी (कवि) अपने घर में आपकी राह देख रहे हैं; हे देवों द्वारा पूजित प्रभु, संकट के समय मेरी सहायता करें और अंत समय में मेरी रक्षा करें।
