The Bajrang Baan (बजरंग बाण) is one of the most potent hymns dedicated to Lord Hanuman — distinct from the Hanuman Chalisa in both tone and purpose. Where the Chalisa is a devotional prayer of praise, the Bajrang Baan is an urgent, direct appeal for protection. The title translates as "Arrow of Bajrang" — Bajrang being another name for Hanuman, derived from Vajrang, meaning one whose limbs are as strong as vajra (thunderbolt).

What makes this text theologically unusual is its use of sapath — oath or adjuration. The devotee invokes the name and oath of Lord Rama to compel Hanuman to act swiftly on their behalf. This directness sets it apart from most devotional hymns, which petition through praise rather than invocation of divine obligation.

It is recited to overcome fear, ward off negative energies, and seek protection in times of crisis. Traditionally chanted on Tuesdays and Saturdays, it is considered especially effective when recited with complete faith and in an unbroken sitting.

Whoever prays with firm faith, love, and respect; Lord Hanuman ensures that all their auspicious tasks are successfully completed.

Chaupai 1

जय हनुमंत संत हितकारी। सुन लीजै प्रभु अरज हमारी॥ जन के काज बिलंब न कीजै। आतुर दौरि महा सुख दीजै॥

Jai Hanumant Sant Hitkari | Sun Leejai Prabhu Araj Hamari || Jan Ke Kaaj Bilamb Na Keejai | Aatur Dauri Maha Sukh Deejai ||

Victory to Hanuman, the benefactor of saints. O Lord, please listen to my humble plea. Do not delay in fulfilling the work of Your devotee; run swiftly to provide great happiness.

जैसे कूदि सिंधु के पारा। सुरसा बदन पैठि बिस्तारा॥ आगे जाइ लंकिनी रोका। मारेहु लात गई सुरलोका॥

Jaise Koodi Sindhu Ke Paara | Surasa Badan Paithi Bistara || Aage Jaai Lankini Roka | Maarehu Laat Gayee Surloka ||

Just as You leaped across the ocean, entered Sursa’s mouth and expanded Your form, then moved forward to defeat the demoness Lankini with a single kick, sending her to the celestial world.

जाय बिभीषण को सुख दीन्हा। सीता निरखि परमपद लीन्हा॥ बाग उजारि सिंधु महँ बोरा। अति आतुर यमकातर तोरा॥

Jaay Bibhishan Ko Sukh Deenha | Sita Nirakhi Parampad Leenha || Baag Ujaari Sindhu Mahan Bora | Ati Aatur Yamkaatar Tora ||

You gave joy to Vibhishana and attained supreme bliss by finding Mother Sita. You destroyed Ravana's garden, threw it into the sea, and shattered the weapons of death with great speed.

अक्षय कुमार को मारि संहारा। लूम लपेटि लंक को जारा॥ लाह समान लंक जरि गई। जय जय धुनि सुरपुर महँ भई॥

Akshay Kumar Ko Maari Sanhara | Loom Lapeti Lank Ko Jara || Laah Samaan Lank Jari Gayee | Jai Jai Dhuni Surpur Mahan Bhayee ||

You killed Akshay Kumar and burnt Lanka by wrapping it in Your flaming tail. Lanka burnt like wax, and shouts of 'Victory!' echoed in the heavens.

अब बिलंब केहि कारन स्वामी। कृपा करहु उर अंतरयामी॥ जय जय लक्ष्मण प्राण के दाता। आतुर होइ दुख करहु निपाता॥

Ab Bilamb Kehi Kaaran Swami | Kripa Karahu Ur Antaryami || Jai Jai Lakshman Praan Ke Data | Aatur Hoi Dukh Karahu Nipata ||

O Lord, what is the reason for the delay now? Show Your grace, O Knower of Hearts. Victory to the savior of Lakshman’s life! Come quickly and destroy my miseries.

जय गिरिधर जय जय सुख सागर। सुर समूह समरथ भटनागर॥ ॐ हनु-हनु-हनु हनुमंत हठीले। बैरिहि मारु बज्र की कीले॥

Jai Giridhar Jai Jai Sukh Sagar | Sur Samooh Samrath Bhatnagar || Om Hanu-Hanu-Hanu Hanumant Hatheele | Bairihi Maaru Bajra Ki Keele ||

Victory to the lifter of the mountain! Victory to the ocean of joy! You are the capable leader of the gods. O stubborn Hanuman, strike the enemy like a nail of thunderbolt.

गदा बज्र लै बैरिहि मारौ। महाराज प्रभु दास उबारौ॥ ॐ ह्रीं ह्रीं ह्रीं हनुमंत कपीसा। ॐ हुं हुं हुं हनु अरि उर सीसा॥

Gada Bajra Lai Bairihi Maarau | Maharaj Prabhu Daas Ubaarau || Om Hreem Hreem Hreem Hanumant Kapeesa | Om Hum Hum Hum Hanu Ari Ur Seesa ||

Take Your mace and thunderbolt to strike the enemy. O Great King, save Your servant. (Mantras follow) O Lord of Monkeys, strike the heart and head of the enemy.

सत्य होहु हरि शपथ पायके। राम दूत धरु मारु धायके॥ जय जय जय हनुमंत अगाधा। दुख पावत जन केहि अपराधा॥

Satya Hohu Hari Shapath Paayke | Ram Doot Dharu Maaru Dhayke || Jai Jai Jai Hanumant Agaadha | Dukh Paavat Jan Kehi Aparadha ||

By the oath of Lord Hari (Rama), let this be true. O messenger of Rama, seize and strike the enemy. Victory to the unfathomable Hanuman! For what sin is Your devotee suffering?

पूजा जप तप नेम अचारा। नहिं जानत कछु दास तुम्हारा॥ वन उपवन मग गिरि गृह माहीं। तुम्हरे बल हम डरपत नाहीं॥

Pooja Jap Tap Nem Achara | Nahin Jaanat Kachhu Daas Tumhara || Van Upvan Mag Giri Grih Maahin | Tumhre Bal Hum Darpat Naahin ||

Your servant knows nothing of complex rituals, chants, or penance. In forests, gardens, paths, mountains, or at home; by Your strength, I fear nothing.

पाय परौं कर जोरि मनावौं। यहि अवसर अब केहि गोहरावौं॥ जय अंजनि कुमार बलवंता। शंकर सुवन धीर हनुमंता॥

Paay Paraun Kar Jori Manaun | Yahi Avsar Ab Kehi Gohravaun || Jai Anjani Kumar Balvanta | Shankar Suvan Dheer Hanumanta ||

I fall at Your feet and pray with folded hands. Whom else should I call at this moment? Victory to the powerful son of Anjani, the incarnation of Shiva, the courageous Hanuman.

मैं आपके चरणों में गिरकर हाथ जोड़कर प्रार्थना करता हूँ। इस समय मैं आपके सिवा और किसे पुकारूँ? हे अंजनी पुत्र, हे शिव के अवतार, धैर्यवान हनुमानजी, आपकी जय हो।

बदन कराल काल कुल घालक। राम सहाय सदा प्रतिपालक॥ भूत प्रेत पिशाच निशाचर। अग्नि बेताल काल मारी मर॥

Badan Karaal Kaal Kul Ghalak | Ram Sahay Sada Pratipalak || Bhoot Pret Pishach Nishachar | Agni Betaal Kaal Maari Mar ||

With a formidable form, You destroy the family of Death itself. You are Rama's helper and the eternal protector. Ghosts, spirits, demons, fire, vampires, and plagues—destroy them all.

इन्हें मारु तोहि शपथ राम की। राखु नाथ मरजाद नाम की॥ जनक सुता हरि दास कहावौ। ताकी शपथ बिलंब न लावौ॥

Inhen Maaru Tohi Shapath Ram Ki | Rakhu Nath Marjaad Naam Ki || Janak Suta Hari Daas Kahaavau | Taaki Shapath Bilamb Na Laavau ||

Strike them! I give You the oath of Lord Rama. O Lord, keep the honor of Your name. You are known as the servant of Sita and Rama; by their oath, do not delay.

जय जय जय धुनि होत अकासा। सुमिरत होत दुसह दुख नासा॥ चरण शरण कर जोरि मनावौं। यहि अवसर अब केहि गोहरावौं॥

Jai Jai Jai Dhuni Hot Akaasa | Sumirat Hot Dusah Dukh Naasa || Charan Sharan Kar Jori Manaavun | Yahi Avsar Ab Kehi Gohravaun ||

Shouts of 'Victory!' fill the sky. By remembering You, unbearable pains are destroyed. I take refuge in Your feet; whom else should I call now?

उठु उठु चलु तोहि राम दुहाई। पाय परौं कर जोरि मनाई॥ ॐ चं चं चं चं चपल चलंता। ॐ हनु हनु हनु हनु हनुमंता॥

Uthu Uthu Chalu Tohi Ram Duhayi | Paay Paraun Kar Jori Manayi || Om Chan Chan Chan Chan Chapal Chalanta | Om Hanu Hanu Hanu Hanu Hanumanta ||

Arise, arise! Move by the appeal of Rama. I beg You at Your feet with folded hands. (Mantras) O swift-moving Hanuman, proceed now.

ॐ हं हं हांक देत कपि चंचल। ॐ सं सं सहमि पराने खल दल॥ जो यह बजरंग बाण जेहि मारै। ताहि कहौ फिरि कौन उबारै॥

Om Han Han Haank Det Kapi Chanchal | Om San San Sahami Parane Khal Dal || Jo Yeh Bajrang Baan Jehi Maarai | Taahi Kahau Phiri Kaun Ubaarai ||

With a roar, the restless monkey moves, and the army of the wicked flees in terror. Tell me, who can save the person who is struck by this Bajrang Baan?

प्रेम प्रतीतिहि कपि भजै, सदा धरैं उर ध्यान। तेहि के कारज सकल शुभ, सिद्ध करैं हनुमान॥

Whoever worships the Lord Monkey with love and faith and meditates on Him in their heart; Lord Hanuman successfully completes all their auspicious tasks.
