The Lakshmi Chalisa is a 40-verse hymn recited to seek the blessings of Goddess Lakshmi for wealth, fortune, prosperity and good health. It is especially popular on Fridays and during Diwali.
॥१॥Doha
मातु लक्ष्मी करि कृपा, करो हृदय में वास।
मनोकामना सिद्ध कर, पुरवहु मेरी आस॥
Matu Lakshmi kari kripa, karo hriday mein vaas.
Manokamna siddh kar, purvahu meri aas.
O Mother Lakshmi, show your grace and reside in my heart. Fulfil my desires and complete my hopes.
हे माता लक्ष्मी! कृपा करके मेरे हृदय में निवास करें और मेरी मनोकामनाएँ पूर्ण करें।
॥२॥Chaupai 1
सिन्धु-सुता मैं सुमिरौं तोहीं। ज्ञान बुद्धि विद्या दो मोहीं॥
Sindhu-suta main sumiron tohi. Gyan buddhi vidya do mohi.
O daughter of the ocean, I call upon you. Grant me knowledge, wisdom and learning.
हे समुद्र-पुत्री! मैं आपका स्मरण करता हूँ। मुझे ज्ञान, बुद्धि और विद्या दीजिए।
॥३॥Chaupai 2
तुम समान नहिं कोई उपकारी। मातु-पिता तुमहि भ्राता नारी॥
Tum saman nahin koi upkari. Matu-pita tumhi bhrata nari.
No one is as generous as you. You are mother, father, brother and consort all in one.
आपके समान कोई उपकारी नहीं। आप ही माता, पिता, भाई और पत्नी हैं।
॥४॥Chaupai 3
जो कोई तुमको ध्यान लगावे। सो धन-धान्य-सुखसमृद्धि पावे॥
Jo koi tumko dhyan lagave. So dhan-dhanya-sukhsamriddhi pave.
Whoever meditates on you obtains wealth, grain, happiness and prosperity.
जो आपका ध्यान लगाता है, उसे धन, धान्य, सुख और समृद्धि मिलती है।
॥५॥Chaupai 4
सोलह नाम प्रताप तुम्हारा। मन-वांछित फल देत तुम्हारा॥
Solah naam pratap tumhara. Man-vanchit phal det tumhara.
The glory of your sixteen names fulfils all heart's desires.
आपके सोलह नामों का प्रताप मनचाहे फल देता है।
॥६॥Chaupai 5
नित्य नूतन रूप विराजे। नव-रत्न-आभूषण साजे॥
Nitya nutan roop viraje. Nav-ratan-abhushan saje.
Your form is ever fresh and new, adorned with jewels of the nine gems.
आपका रूप नित्य नया और सुंदर है। नवरत्नों के आभूषणों से सजा है।
॥७॥Chaupai 6
धन-धान्य कनक बरसावे। नर-नारी सब भक्ति दिखावे॥
Dhan-dhanya kanak barsave. Nar-nari sab bhakti dikhave.
You shower gold, grain and wealth. Men and women all show devotion to you.
धन, धान्य और सोना बरसाती हैं। स्त्री-पुरुष सब भक्ति दिखाते हैं।
॥८॥Chaupai 7
जो तुम्हरी पूजा-आरती करहीं। ताके घर मंगल भरपूर भरहीं॥
Jo tumhari puja-aarti karhin. Take ghar mangal bharpoor bharhin.
In the home of those who perform your puja and aarti, auspiciousness is filled to the brim.
जो आपकी पूजा-आरती करते हैं, उनके घर में मंगल भरपूर भरा रहता है।
॥९॥Chaupai 8
धन की कमी न उनके घर में। लक्ष्मी नारायण साथ उनमें॥
Dhan ki kami na unke ghar mein. Lakshmi-Narayan saath unmen.
There is no lack of wealth in their home. Lakshmi and Narayan dwell together with them.
उनके घर में धन की कमी नहीं होती। लक्ष्मी-नारायण उनके साथ रहते हैं।
॥१०॥Chaupai 9
नारायण-प्रिया कमला माता। देहु हमें वर सुख विख्याता॥
Narayan-priya Kamala mata. Dehu hamen var sukh vikhyata.
O Kamala (Lakshmi), beloved of Narayan, dear Mother! Grant us the famous boon of happiness.
हे नारायण-प्रिया कमला माता! हमें सुख का वरदान दीजिए।
॥११॥Chaupai 10
दुरित-दरिद्र तुम दूर भगावो। शुभ सम्पत्ति घर लाकर दो॥
Durit-daridra tum door bhagavo. Shubh sampatti ghar lakar do.
Drive away misfortune and poverty. Bring auspicious wealth into our home.
दुरित और दरिद्रता दूर भगाएँ। शुभ सम्पत्ति घर लाकर दें।
॥१२॥Chaupai 11
जल-थल-नभ सब जगह तुम्हारी। लक्ष्मी तू सब जग की नारी॥
Jal-thal-nabh sab jagah tumhari. Lakshmi tu sab jag ki nari.
You pervade water, land and sky – everywhere. O Lakshmi, you are the feminine principle of the entire universe.
जल, थल और आकाश में सर्वत्र आप हैं। हे लक्ष्मी! आप सारे जगत की नारी हैं।
॥१३॥Chaupai 12
सागर-सुता कमल-आसीना। सदा कृपा करो भक्त-चीना॥
Sagar-suta kamal-asina. Sada kripa karo bhakt-china.
Daughter of the ocean, seated on the lotus – always show grace to those who recognise you as devotees.
सागर-सुता, कमल पर विराजमान! अपने भक्तों पर सदा कृपा करें।
