The Hanuman Chalisa is a 40-verse devotional hymn composed by the 16th-century poet-saint Tulsidas in the Awadhi dialect of Hindi. It is the most recited prayer dedicated to Lord Hanuman and is believed to ward off evil and bestow strength on the devotee.
॥१॥Doha 1
श्रीगुरु चरन सरोज रज, निज मनु मुकुरु सुधारि।
बरनउँ रघुबर बिमल जसु, जो दायकु फल चारि॥
Shri guru charan saroj raj, nij manu mukuru sudhari.
Barnau raghubar bimal jasu, jo dayaku phal chari.
Cleansing the mirror of my mind with the dust of the Guru's lotus feet, I sing the pure glory of Rama, the best of Raghus, which bestows all four fruits of life (dharma, artha, kama, moksha).
गुरु के चरण-कमलों की धूल से अपने मन-रूपी दर्पण को साफ़ करके, मैं रघुकुल-श्रेष्ठ राम का निर्मल यश गाता हूँ, जो चारों फल देता है।
Knowing my body to be devoid of intelligence, I call upon you, O son of the Wind god. Bless me with strength, wisdom and knowledge, and remove my afflictions and impurities.
अपने तन को बुद्धिहीन जानकर, हे पवनपुत्र हनुमान! मैं आपका स्मरण करता हूँ। मुझे बल, बुद्धि और विद्या दीजिए और मेरे क्लेश व विकारों को दूर कीजिए।
॥३॥Chaupai 1
जय हनुमान ज्ञान गुन सागर। जय कपीस तिहुँ लोक उजागर॥
Jai Hanuman gyan gun sagar. Jai Kapees tihun lok ujagar.
Victory to Hanuman, the ocean of wisdom and virtue. Victory to the lord of monkeys who illumines all three worlds.
हे हनुमान! आपकी जय हो – आप ज्ञान और गुणों के सागर हैं। हे कपिराज! आपकी जय हो, जो तीनों लोकों में प्रकाश फैलाते हैं।
॥४॥Chaupai 2
राम दूत अतुलित बल धामा। अञ्जनि-पुत्र पवनसुत नामा॥
Ram doot atulit bal dhama. Anjani-putra pavansut nama.
You are the messenger of Rama, the abode of incomparable strength, known by the names Anjani's son and the son of the Wind god.
आप राम के दूत हैं और अतुलनीय बल के धाम हैं। आप अंजनी-पुत्र और पवनसुत के नाम से जाने जाते हैं।
॥५॥Chaupai 3
महाबीर बिक्रम बजरंगी। कुमति निवार सुमति के संगी॥
Mahaveer bikram bajrangi. Kumati niwar sumati ke sangi.
O great hero, mighty and powerful as a thunderbolt! You dispel evil intellect and are the companion of the virtuous-minded.
हे महावीर! आप वज्र के समान शक्तिशाली हैं। आप कुबुद्धि को दूर करने वाले और सद्बुद्धि के साथी हैं।
॥६॥Chaupai 4
कञ्चन बरन बिराज सुबेसा। कानन कुण्डल कुञ्चित केसा॥
Kanchan baran biraj subesa. Kanan kundal kunchit kesa.
Golden in complexion, resplendent in beautiful attire, with earrings in your ears and curly locks of hair.
आप सोने जैसे वर्ण वाले और सुंदर वेशभूषा में सुशोभित हैं। आपके कानों में कुंडल और घुंघराले केश हैं।
॥७॥Chaupai 5
हाथ बज्र औ ध्वजा बिराजै। काँधे मूँज जनेऊ साजै॥
Hath bajra au dhwaja birajai. Kandhe moonj janeu sajai.
In your hands you hold a thunderbolt and a flag; on your shoulder is adorned the sacred thread made of munja grass.
आपके हाथ में वज्र और ध्वजा सुशोभित है। आपके कंधे पर मूँज का जनेऊ सजा है।
॥८॥Chaupai 6
शंकर सुवन केसरी नन्दन। तेज प्रताप महा जग बन्दन॥
Shankar suvan Kesari nandan. Tej pratap maha jag bandan.
You are the son of Shiva and the beloved son of Kesari. Your blazing radiance and glory are worshipped throughout the world.
आप शंकर के पुत्र और केसरी के नंदन हैं। आपका तेज और प्रताप इतना महान है कि सारा जगत आपको वंदन करता है।
॥९॥Chaupai 7
बिद्यावान गुनी अति चातुर। राम काज करिबे को आतुर॥
Bidyavan guni ati chatur. Ram kaj karibe ko atur.
You are learned, virtuous, and supremely clever, and you are ever eager to carry out Rama's work.
आप विद्यावान, गुणी और अत्यंत चतुर हैं। आप सदा राम का कार्य करने के लिए उत्सुक रहते हैं।
॥१०॥Chaupai 8
प्रभु चरित्र सुनिबे को रसिया। राम लखन सीता मन बसिया॥
Prabhu charitra sunibe ko rasiya. Ram Lakhan Sita man basiya.
You delight in hearing the deeds of the Lord. In your heart reside Rama, Lakshmana, and Sita.
आप प्रभु के चरित्र सुनने के रसिक हैं। आपके मन में राम, लक्ष्मण और सीता निवास करते हैं।
॥११॥Chaupai 9
सूक्ष्म रूप धरि सियहिं दिखावा। बिकट रूप धरि लंक जरावा॥
Sukshma roop dhari siyahi dikhawa. Bikat roop dhari lank jarawa.
You assumed a tiny form to appear before Sita, and a fearsome form to set Lanka ablaze.
आपने सूक्ष्म रूप धारण कर सीता को दर्शन दिया और विकट रूप धारण करके लंका जलाई।
॥१२॥Chaupai 10
भीम रूप धरि असुर सँहारे। रामचंद्र के काज सँवारे॥
Bheem roop dhari asur sanhare. Ramchandra ke kaj sanware.
You took a fearsome form and slew the demons, accomplishing all the works of Lord Ramachandra.
आपने भीम रूप धारण करके असुरों का संहार किया और रामचंद्र के सभी कार्य सफल किए।
॥१३॥Chaupai 11
लाय सञ्जीवन लखन जियाये। श्री रघुबीर हरषि उर लाये॥
Lay sanjeevan Lakhan jiyaye. Shri Raghubird harshi ur laye.
You brought the Sanjeevani herb and revived Lakshmana. Shri Raghuveer (Rama) joyfully embraced you to his heart.
आप संजीवनी लाकर लक्ष्मण को जीवित किए। श्री रघुवीर ने प्रसन्न होकर आपको हृदय से लगाया।
॥१४॥Chaupai 12
रघुपति कीन्ही बहुत बड़ाई। तुम मम प्रिय भरतहि सम भाई॥
Raghupati kinhi bahut badai. Tum mam priya Bharatahi sam bhai.
Raghupati (Rama) praised you greatly, saying, 'You are as dear to me as my brother Bharata.'
रघुपति ने आपकी बहुत प्रशंसा की और कहा, 'तुम मुझे भरत के समान प्रिय हो।'
॥१५॥Chaupai 13
सहस बदन तुम्हारो जस गावैं। अस कहि श्रीपति कण्ठ लगावैं॥
Sahas badan tumharo jas gawain. As kahi Shripati kanth lagawain.
Sheshnaga with his thousand mouths sings your glory – saying this, Shripati (Vishnu/Rama) embraced you.
हजारों मुखों वाला शेषनाग आपका यश गाता है – ऐसा कहकर श्रीपति ने आपको अपने गले से लगाया।
Sab sukh lahai tumhari sarna. Tum rakshak kahu ko dar na.
All happiness is found in your shelter. With you as protector, there is nothing to fear.
आपकी शरण में सब सुख मिलता है। आप रक्षक हैं तो किसी को डर नहीं।
॥२५॥Chaupai 23
आपन तेज सम्हारो आपै। तीनों लोक हाँक तें काँपै॥
Apan tej samharo apai. Teenon lok hank te kampai.
Only you can contain your own radiance and power. At your roar, all three worlds tremble.
आपके तेज को आप ही संभाल सकते हैं। आपकी गर्जना से तीनों लोक काँप उठते हैं।
॥२६॥Chaupai 24
भूत पिसाच निकट नहिं आवै। महाबीर जब नाम सुनावै॥
Bhoot pisach nikat nahin awai. Mahaveer jab naam sunawai.
Ghosts and evil spirits dare not come near when the name of Mahaveer (Hanuman) is uttered.
जब महावीर हनुमान का नाम लिया जाता है, तब भूत-पिशाच पास नहीं आते।
॥२७॥Chaupai 25
नासै रोग हरै सब पीरा। जपत निरंतर हनुमत बीरा॥
Nasai rog harai sab peera. Japat nirantar Hanumat beera.
All diseases are destroyed and all pain removed for one who continuously chants the name of brave Hanuman.
निरंतर हनुमान जी का नाम जपने से रोग नष्ट होते हैं और सब पीड़ाएँ दूर होती हैं।
॥२८॥Chaupai 26
संकट तें हनुमान छुड़ावै। मन क्रम बचन ध्यान जो लावै॥
Sankat te Hanuman chhudawai. Man kram bachan dhyan jo lawai.
Hanuman frees one from all troubles – whoever meditates on him in thought, deed, and word.
जो मन, कर्म और वचन से हनुमान का ध्यान करता है, वह सभी संकटों से मुक्त हो जाता है।
॥२९॥Chaupai 27
सब पर राम तपस्वी राजा। तिन के काज सकल तुम साजा॥
Sab par Ram tapasvi raja. Tin ke kaj sakal tum saja.
Rama is the ascetic king above all. You accomplish all his works.
राम सबके ऊपर तपस्वी राजा हैं। उनके सभी कार्य आप पूर्ण करते हैं।
॥३०॥Chaupai 28
और मनोरथ जो कोई लावै। सोइ अमित जीवन फल पावै॥
Aur manorath jo koi lawai. Soi amit jeevan phal pawai.
Whoever brings any wish before you receives limitless blessings and fruit in life.
जो भी आपके सामने कोई मनोकामना लाता है, वह जीवन में अनंत फल प्राप्त करता है।
॥३१॥Chaupai 29
चारों जुग परताप तुम्हारा। है परसिद्ध जगत उजियारा॥
Charon jug partap tumhara. Hai parsiddh jagat ujiyara.
Your glory spans all four ages (Yugas). Your fame illumines the world.
चारों युगों में आपका प्रताप है। आपकी प्रसिद्धि से जगत उजाला हो जाता है।
॥३२॥Chaupai 30
साधु सन्त के तुम रखवारे। असुर निकंदन राम दुलारे॥
Sadhu sant ke tum rakhware. Asur nikandn Ram dulare.
You are the protector of saints and sages, the destroyer of demons, and the beloved of Rama.
आप साधु-संतों के रक्षक हैं, असुरों के नाशक हैं और राम के प्रिय हैं।
॥३३॥Chaupai 31
अष्टसिद्धि नौ निधि के दाता। अस बर दीन्ह जानकी माता॥
Ashta siddhi nau nidhi ke data. As bar deenh Janaki mata.
You are the bestower of the eight siddhis (supernatural powers) and the nine nidhis (treasures) – this boon was granted to you by Mother Janaki (Sita).
आप आठ सिद्धियों और नौ निधियों के दाता हैं। यह वरदान माता जानकी ने आपको दिया है।
॥३४॥Chaupai 32
राम रसायन तुम्हरे पासा। सदा रहो रघुपति के दासा॥
Ram rasayan tumhare pasa. Sada raho Raghupati ke dasa.
You hold the elixir of Rama's devotion. You are forever the servant of Raghupati.
आपके पास राम-भक्ति का रसायन है। आप सदा रघुपति के दास बने रहते हैं।
॥३५॥Chaupai 33
तुम्हरे भजन राम को पावै। जनम जनम के दुख बिसरावै॥
Tumhare bhajan Ram ko pawai. Janam janam ke dukh bisrawai.
Through devotion to you, one attains Rama and forgets the sorrows accumulated over many lifetimes.
आपके भजन से राम की प्राप्ति होती है और जन्म-जन्मांतर के दुःख भूल जाते हैं।
॥३६॥Chaupai 34
अन्त काल रघुबर पुर जाई। जहाँ जन्म हरि-भक्त कहाई॥
Ant kal Raghubar pur jai. Jahan janam Hari-bhakt kahai.
At the end of life, one goes to Rama's abode. And wherever one is reborn, one is known as a devotee of Hari.
अंत काल में रघुवर के धाम जाता है और जहाँ भी जन्म लेता है, हरि-भक्त कहलाता है।
॥३७॥Chaupai 35
और देवता चित्त न धरई। हनुमत सेइ सर्ब सुख करई॥
Aur devata chitt na dharai. Hanumat sei sarb sukh karai.
One need not keep any other deity in mind. Serving Hanuman bestows all happiness.
किसी अन्य देवता का ध्यान न करें – हनुमान की सेवा से सभी सुख मिलते हैं।
॥३८॥Chaupai 36
संकट कटै मिटै सब पीरा। जो सुमिरै हनुमत बलबीरा॥
Sankat katai mitai sab peera. Jo sumirai Hanumat balbeera.
All troubles are cut away and all pain is erased for one who remembers the mighty hero Hanuman.
जो बलवीर हनुमान का स्मरण करता है, उसके सब संकट कट जाते हैं और पीड़ाएँ मिट जाती हैं।
॥३९॥Chaupai 37
जय जय जय हनुमान गोसाईं। कृपा करहु गुरुदेव की नाईं॥
Jai jai jai Hanuman gosain. Kripa karahu gurudev ki nahin.
Glory, glory, glory to Hanuman, the master of senses! Bestow your grace upon me as a Guru does.
जय, जय, जय हो हनुमान गोसाईं! गुरुदेव की भाँति कृपा कीजिए।
॥४०॥Chaupai 38
जो सत बार पाठ कर कोई। छूटहि बंदि महा सुख होई॥
Jo sat bar path kar koi. Chhootahi bandi maha sukh hoi.
Whoever recites this a hundred times is freed from bondage and attains great happiness.
जो इस चालीसा का सौ बार पाठ करता है, वह बंधनों से मुक्त होकर महान सुख पाता है।
॥४१॥Chaupai 39
जो यह पढ़ै हनुमान चालीसा। होय सिद्धि साखी गौरीसा॥
Jo yah padhai Hanuman Chalisa. Hoy siddhi sakhi Gaurisa.
Whoever reads this Hanuman Chalisa attains all success – Gaurishiva (Shiva) himself is witness to this.
जो हनुमान चालीसा पढ़ता है, उसे सिद्धि मिलती है – इसके साक्षी स्वयं गौरीशंकर (शिव) हैं।
॥४२॥Chaupai 40
तुलसीदास सदा हरि चेरा। कीजै नाथ हृदय मँह डेरा॥
Tulsidas sada Hari chera. Kijai nath hriday mahn dera.
Tulsidas is forever the servant of Hari. O Lord, please take up residence in my heart.
तुलसीदास सदा हरि के सेवक हैं। हे नाथ! मेरे हृदय में निवास कीजिए।
Pavantanay sankat haran, mangal murati roop.
Ram Lakhan Sita sahit, hriday basahu sur bhoop.
O son of the Wind, remover of distress, the very embodiment of auspiciousness! Please dwell in my heart along with Rama, Lakshmana, and Sita, O king of the gods.
हे पवनपुत्र, संकट हरने वाले, मंगलमूर्ति! राम, लक्ष्मण और सीता सहित मेरे हृदय में निवास कीजिए, हे देवराज!
